What is Yoga?

At Honor we believe yoga is a way of life, a perspective and actions to take, that support the best of well-being in relationships with each other, with the environment, and everything.

Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word "yuj” which means union or yoke. Union with all things but particularly union of mind to our bodies. Most of the time our attention is outside ourselves creating lists of things to do or worrying about what’s to come or what we should have done- it's quite endless. Sanskrit is the language of yoga, and therefore, you’ll hear our teachers use Sanskrit words in classes such as the names of yoga postures. The Sanskrit language is tonal and since its vibration is melodic sometimes Sanskrit helps to understand the shape or direction of a pose or impact our own vibration.

At Honor you will be introduced to your teacher. Our teachers know students by name and inquire about any physical complaints or ask questions to make sure guidance is tailored to you. We make sure you have what you need- a mat or yoga props such as blocks, bolster, blanket. Our non-meditation classes instruct a sequence of poses that move the body and spine in all directions. Typically, classes begin seated or laying down and the teacher guides you to bring your awareness to the present moment by focusing on the breath or sensations in your body. Throughout the class the teacher will provide clear details as to how to create the poses all while continuing to call your attention to your thoughts, sensations, and breath. End class by laying down and relaxing!

This is the most common myth about starting yoga practice. There is no need to have flexibility. In fact, most poses require building strength. Additionally, yoga practice is not just creating shapes with your body. You need only to be open-minded, and even then, all are welcome.

Yes! Our teachers explain what they are instructing. We value the importance of inclusion. Honor teachers ensure that each student is seen, given options, and follows the pace that best suits them.

Nothing special required. Wear comfortable clothes that move easily. If you do not own a mat, we will provide you with one or you have the option to purchase.

Nope. The guidance of our teachers brings students’ attention inwardly to themselves.

Since yoga is living with a perspective that all is connected and actions that help the well-being of that, it is continual work to remember this perspective. In terms of one aspect of yoga practice, the poses, we practice them too. Every day we change and therefore each day the shape is different, our attention changes in that it deepens, our breathing changes as our bodies change from practicing poses. We are ever-changing and so is the yoga we practice.

One yoga class and you’ll feel the positive impact right away. Walk away feeling lighter, more focused, at greater ease in your body. Even just 10min will change how you feel. Be it videos on demand (hyperlink), live-stream (take a class on your device) (hyperlink to find a studio near you?), or shorter classes (hyperlink to definition of express class), we meet your need for something on your time. The amazing thing is that a little practice goes such a long way.
